Q1. Is it possible to have my label checked for compliance without paying for a Compliance Certificate?

A1. Yes. Simply submit a completed request for a label review form with the appropriate fee and we will complete a full label review and provide you with a written report. If you want to leave it there, that’s fine.

Q2. I have had my labels checked by another organisation. Can I simply apply for a Compliance Certificate without having a label review?

A2. No. We will only issue a Compliance Certificate after we have undertaken a full label review, issued a written report and any non-compliances identified in the report have been remedied.

Q3. I am concerned that if I send my specifications and recipes to you they may fall into the hands of my competitors. Can you guarantee confidentiality?

A3. Yes absolutely. Unlike other food law consultants we are also a specialist firm of solicitors regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. As such we can absolutely guarantee that your confidentiality will be protected. You can read more about your right to confidentiality on the SRA website

Q4. I have several products that I would like to have checked, are there any discounts available?

A4. Yes of course. We recognise that it is important for all businesses to keep costs to a minimum and so we offer a discount on second and subsequent request for label review fees as long as they are all submitted to us at the same time.

Q5. When do I have to pay your fees?

A5. The label review fee is due on submission of the completed request for a label review form. Renewal fees are due on the renewal date but may be paid up to 3 months in advance.

Q6 I am a start-up business so this would be a big investment for me. What are the benefits of the scheme?

A6. In the past we have advised many start-up businesses who have had their labels and packaging printed, often at great cost, only to find that the food information that they have printed is unlawful. Retail buyers will also often take legal compliance of labels into account when considering whether to stock new products. Consumers have voiced concerns regarding the trustworthiness of food labels. ABC Legal Labels gives you peace of mind that your labels and packaging are correct and that you will not face enforcement action or costly product recalls. It provides both consumers and retail buyers with confidence in your product and assurances that any claims made on the label have been independently reviewed and approved.

Q7. I am a buyer for a retail group. Are there any cost implications for us to require our suppliers to become members of your scheme?

A7. No. All costs of the scheme are met by the food manufacturers who benefit from the assurance that they will not have to undergo any re-print of incorrect labels. Retail buyers can therefore buy products which bear the ABC Legal Labels logo with confidence and at no additional cost.

Q8. Can I choose to let the Compliance Certificate lapse?

A8. Yes but you will no longer be able to reproduce the ABC Legal Labels logo on your products, website or any documentation. We will also update the status of the Compliance Certificate on the public register of our website and so you will no longer be able to rely on the protection that the certificate gives you.

Q9. Once I let the Compliance Certificate lapse can I simply apply for a renewal?

A9. No. Once a Compliance Certificate lapses we will require a new application to be submitted.

Q10. Can I use the logo on my website?

A10. Yes of course. However, there are some rules that we would like you to follow and these are set out in Section 7 of the Brand Standard.

Q11. Can I use the logo on my Facebook page and in Tweets?

A11. Yes of course. However, there are some rules that we would like you to follow and these are set out in Section 7 of the Brand Standard.

Q12. How long will the process take?

A12. We have set out some timescales in Section 4 of the Brand Standard. If you are able to provide a fully completed application form with supporting material then we will always try to get your written report to you within 10 working days. A Compliance Certificate will be issued as soon as we have assurances that any non-compliances have been rectified.

If your label is more urgent, tell us – we will do everything we can to meet your deadlines.

Q13. Will you help me to complete my request for label review form?

A13. Yes of course. We have some examples of properly completed forms on our website but if you require further guidance or help our Client Relationship Manager will be happy to assist.

Q14. Can I use my own data to complete the nutritional information panel?

A14. Yes but we will need certain assurances from you that the information is correct. For example copies of analyst reports relating to the product. Alternatively we recommend that you use Nutritional Information Solutions ( to calculate your nutritional data.
